Primary Resources

These sites are recommended as a starting point in your search for Aberdeen and N.E. Scotland ancestors.

  • Web Link Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives

Aberdeen City Archives exists to collect and preserve historical records relating to the City of Aberdeen and its locality and to secure significant modern records for future generation.

  • Web Link Ancestry.co.uk

This pay-per-view site collates both official records and other reference information.  Members visiting our Research Centre can access this site without charge.

  • Web Link Cyndi's List

A fantastic resource with links to just about every genealogical website!

  • Web Link Deceased Online

This is a pay-per-view site providing access to official records for UK burials and cremations.

  • Web Link Edina

The two Statistical Accounts of Scotland, covering the 1790s and the 1830s, are among the best contemporary reports of life during the agricultural and industrial revolutions in Europe.  This site allows you to browse online copies of these documents.

  • Web Link FamilySearch

Search the online IGI and Ancestral File records.

  • Web Link FindMyPast

This pay-per-view site is the official online source of census records and BMD information for England & Wales from 1837 onwards.

This site also covers Military records as well as travel and migration records.

The site also includes British Newspapers 1710-1953, including Scottish Newspapers.

  • Web Link FreeCen

Online access to free 19th Century UK census transcriptions.  These transcriptions are provided by volunteers, and the census coverage is improving all the time.  Unlike the sister site (FreeBMD), FreeCen does cover Scotland and, in fact, coverage is very good.  So, if you need to look up census information, this site is an excellent starting point

  • Web Link FreeBMD

Online access to free birth/marriage/death record transcriptions for England & Wales.  Please note, these transcriptions do not cover Scotland.

  • Web Link GENUKI

A free collection, run by volunteers, providing genealogical information for Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.  Information is organised by parishes within counties.

  • Web Link GENUKI Aberdeenshire

    The GENUKI Aberdeenshire pages.

  • Web Link GENUKI Banffshire

    The GENUKI Banffshire pages.

  • Web Link GENUKI Kincardineshire

    The GENUKI Kincardinshire pages.

  • Web Link GENUKI Moray

    The GENUKI Moray pages.

  • Web Link Old Maps

A fantastic collection of detailed maps of Scotland at the National Library

The county maps are particularly good – on the 1st Edition 6-inch Ordnance Survey maps you can overlay a modern Google aerial map to see whether places are still in existence.
  • Web Link Scotland's People

Provided by the National Records of Scotland, this is the official pay-to-view site that gives searchable access to parish register, civil registration and census records for Scotland.

  • Web Link Statistical Accounts

The Statistical Accounts of Scotland - Old (1791-99) and New (1834-1845)
    Fascinating descriptions of each parish.
